Funeral Service Intern/Apprentice

Brookings-Smith Funeral Homes in Bangor, Maine is looking for the right candidate for a summer 2021 internship. Our professional staff will help train the right individual in all areas of funeral service. Job duties include making transfers, some weekends, assisting on embalming, cosmetics, funeral and memorial services, and all job duties that part of the daily operation in funeral services. Salary will be based upon experience and performance. Housing is not provided. A clean driver's license, computer skills and a person in good health that can lift is required.

Brookings-Smith has been serving the Bangor Region since 1874. We have 4 locations in Bangor, Brewer, Hampden and Orono. We meet most families in the Life Tribute Center of Brookings-Smith in Bangor which is a separate arrangement center to assist families in both preneed and at-need services. In 1999, we developed a direct cremation business called Memorial Alternatives for people that are looking for basic cremation needs that is low cost. In 2005 we also built the Pine Grove Crematorium in Bangor to handle the cremation needs of not only our firm but other funeral homes throughout Maine. In all of our facilities we assist families with reception needs for the non-structured consumer. Because of Covid-19 all of our facilities have the ability to web stream so families can virtually be part of the memorialization process. Bangor and Brewer, Maine are separated by the Penobscot River which is tidal. We are 45 miles from Acadia National Park and the Town of Bar Harbor. If you like mountain climbing Baxter State Park is close by with wonderful sights and climbing up Mt. Katandin. The flag ship campus of the University of Maine is in Orono where one of our branches is located. Bangor is an up and coming city in Eastern Maine known for out door concerts at the Darlings Waterfront Pavilion, indoor concerts at the Cross Insurance Center, along with the Hollywood Casino. Apprentice Funeral Director or Licensed Funeral Director/Embalmer

Job Summary:

To oversee the planning, organization, and management of all aspects of funeral services.  To assist families following the loss of a loved one and to implement the choices made by that family for services and final disposition.  They must interact well with people and provide their duties with compassion and emotional stability.

Job Responsibilities: 

  • Performs on-call responsibilities including: taking first calls, talking with families, and answering questions.
  • Make first call removals or arrange with staff for the removals to be made in a timely manner.
  • Supervise and care for the deceased: verifying identification, obtaining permission for embalming, embalming, dressing, cosmetics and casketing.  Proper care and storage of bodies for cremation.
  • Meets with families of the deceased to discuss funeral arrangements and requests.
  • Explains pricing and product information for caskets and flowers to family and/or friends.
  • Orders casket, flowers, and other necessities for funeral and memorial services.
  • Assists families with making arrangements with the cemetery and scheduling of services.
  • Accepts and process payments for funeral services.

  • Oversees transportation of casket to church and cemetery.

Minimum Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or equivalency
  • Has successfully completed 60 hours of academic work at an accredited college or University.
  • Has successfully graduated from a n accredited school of mortuary science Has successfully completed one year of apprenticeship under and recognized by the state of West Virginia.
  • Has a West Virginia Funeral Directors and Embalmers License in good standing.

Work Environment, Hours, and Salary

Work consists of a 40 plus hour work week, depending on the needs of families.  Weekend and evening hours are common.  Will spend a significant portion of time in a professional setting meeting with families, making arrangements, overseeing funerals, visitations, memorial services.  This will be done at the funeral home, church or other venue chosen by the family.  Embalming room as needed to embalm, dress and casket bodies.

Working with a LIC Funeral Director on a schedule of 8:30 am to 4:00 pm M – F, with a three-day weekend followed by a day off on week of weekend off.  On call M & W or T & Th and weekend on call.

Salary, benefits, and bonus are commensurate with experience.

Forensic Technician Positions In Connecticut

Connecticut Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME)

The Connecticut Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) is seeking Three (3) Part-Time (17 hours per week) Forensic Technician 1 positions to refill recent vacancies.

The Connecticut OCME is a National Association of Medical Examiners (NAME) Accredited, free-standing, modern facility that is located in historic Farmington Connecticut on the Campus of the University of Connecticut Health Center and Medical School. The OCME is a centralized, state-wide medical examiner system with an autopsy load of approximately 2,700 per year.

Duties of the Forensic Technician include:

  • Under supervision prepares bodies for autopsies and subsequent release to funeral directors.
  • Assists in performance of autopsies and collection of relevant information.
  • Assists in removal and dissection of organs, collection of body fluids and retention of specimens for special studies.
  • Prepares fixative solutions.
  • Maintains cleanliness and sanitation of autopsy facilities and equipment.
  • Assists in maintenance of appropriate records.
  • May take fingerprints and photographs.
  • Picks up and transports deceased bodies to the OCME.
  • Takes inventory of and makes receipt for clothing and valuables.
  • Maintains chain of custody of body and evidence from crime scenes.
  • May assist in removal of bodies from hospitals and/or secured crime scene areas.
  • May take and develop X-rays.

Compensation:
The starting hourly salary for this position is $20.59. There are additional opportunities for compensation through overtime opportunities and holiday coverage. The Forensic Technicians are members of the District 1199 New England Healthcare Employees union.
