Primary Responsibilities

  • Respond to first calls and removals
  • Provide attention and care for deceased
  • Meet with surviving family to arrange funeral service and disposition
  • Coordinate service details with office staff, officiate and other participants
  • Be available to answer any family questions that may arise
  • Direct funeral and supporting services: staff, family, minister, participants
  • Assist participants with their role during funeral events
  • Secure and collect payment
  • Complete post-service details in a timely manner

Schedule Expectations

  • Work in shifts
  • Evening “On-call” schedule amongst co-workers at night a must
  • Work outside in extreme weather conditions including high and low temperatures and rain
  • Work some national holidays

Apprentice Funeral Director

Job Description

The apprentice is responsible for performing a variety of tasks during the preparation, planning, and execution of the funeral to ensure services run smoothly and that our families are served with dignity and respect. Responsibilities will include:

  • Full-time availability (including being on call) to take care of transferring decedents to and from the funeral home;
  • Ensuring proper paperwork for disposition is completed accurate and submitted on time and in accordance with relevant laws and regulations;
  • Data entry using the Massachusetts Electronic Death Records System (VIP/EDRS);
  • Dressing, Casketing, and cosmetizing of decedents in our care;
  • Conducting visitations and funeral services under the supervision of a licensed funeral director;
  • Coordinating arrangements with clergy, military organizations, and others involved in the funeral service.


  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Current Mortuary School student/graduate.
  • Ability to lift 80 lbs.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects, prioritize tasks, and exercise good judgment.
  • Willingness to participate in community events
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs
  • Ability to empathize with families and demonstrate patience in emotionally charged situations.
  • Valid state-issued driver’s license in good standing.
